On 5 August 1866, the Illustrated London News ran a full story on the ceremony that took place in Valentia where Sir Robert Peel officially marked the connection to the cable station of the first transatlantic communications cable. He was joined by Lord John Hay and the Knight of Kerry with whom he stayed at his mansion at Glenleam, Knightstown for the duration of his visit.
